Nurse Practitioner examinations
The CNPLE launched in 2026, with its first administration in May. Its implementation is occurring at different times across participating jurisdictions. Some regulators continue to use the CNPE or another applicable examination during the transition. Québec and certain specialty categories may follow different examination requirements. Click Here.
CNO states Council approved the Canadian Nurse Practitioner Licensure Examination (CNPLE) effective July 1, 2026.
NSCN explains the new NP model begins in 2026, with CNPLE used once ready, with noted exceptions (e.g., Québec and neonatal NP).

After your exam (and any final requirements), the regulator issues your registration/permit. You can only practise and use the protected title once your registration is active.
C) Maintaining your licence (Continuing competence / QA)
Regulators require ongoing competence/quality assurance activities. Ontario’s official overview (example).
