Nurse Registration Process – Alberta
The CRNA regulates Registered Nurses (RNs) and Nurse Practitioners (NPs) in Alberta. International applicants follow a structured “permit” pathway using the CRNA portal (College Connect).
Step 1: Create your College Connect account
CRNA’s official “Five Steps to a Permit” begins with creating an account, validating identity, building your profile, and paying an account creation fee.
Step 2: Confirm competency
CRNA confirms there are multiple pathways to confirm competence. One option includes combining NCLEX-RN with an NNAS advisory report or an approved education credential assessment.
Step 3: Meet eligibility requirements
CRNA lists these as part of eligibility:
-
Currency of practice
-
English language proficiency
-
Post-secondary education requirement
-
Online criminal record check
-
Character/fitness-to-practise questions and attestations
Step 4: Prepare for practice in Alberta (required courses + liability protection
CRNA states you must complete:
-
Jurisprudence and Protecting Patients from Sexual Abuse and Misconduct courses
-
Purchase professional liability protection
Step 5: Exams and assessments you may see (RN focus)
CRNA indicates all pathways require NCLEX-RN.
If you need an assessment option to meet gaps, CRNA references the Registered Nurses Canadian Competence Assessment Program (RNCCAP) (formerly ARNAP) administered by Touchstone, and notes referral letters are no longer required.
