Ontario Registration Pathway: Long Roadmap for IEMs
Step 1
Read about midwifery in Canada in general , the Canadian Midwifery Registration Examination (CMRE), and midwifery in different Canadian provinces and territories.
Step 2
Decide which province or territory you plan to work in.
Step 3
Find out which official languages of Canada (i.e., French or English) are mainly spoken/used in the province or territory you wish to work in and are required by the midwifery regulatory body for registration in that province or territory.
Step 4
Establish your French and/or English language assessment level via an approved assessment/examination.
Step 5
Ensure you have the required status for registration in bridging program, orientation or assessment program or midwifery regulatory body: e.g., Permanent Resident, Canadian Citizen or Refugee status. Consider need for study or work permit.
Step 6
Successfully complete a College of Midwives of Ontario (CMO)-approved bridging or assessment program:
a) International Midwifery Preregistration Bridging Program (see Chang School),
OR
b) CMO Orientation and Assessment Pilot Program (currently closed to applications).
Step 7
Ensure that you meet all CMO registration requirements, which include (at least) successful completion of the CMRE, proof of training in cardiopulmonary resuscitation, emergency skills in obstetrics, and neonatal resuscitation, demonstration of successful results in English or French language proficiency test, completion of CMO’s jurisprudence online course and exam, demonstration of good character, proof that legally entitled to work in Canada, and that have arranged professional liability insurance.
Step 8
Get hired by a midwifery practice group (MPG) and secure professional liability insurance.
Step 9
Become a member of the Association of Ontario Midwives (AOM).
Step 10
Register with the CMO.
CMO language requirements and assessments:
Demonstrate proficiency in either French or English with one of the following:
- Graduation from a recognized program of midwifery education in English or French in any jurisdiction in Canada;
- Registration as a midwife in a Canadian jurisdiction;
- Successful results on an English or French language proficiency test acceptable to the College.
