Manitoba Registration Pathway: Long Roadmap for IEMs
Internationally educated midwives wanting to work as a midwife in Manitoba must register with the College of Midwives of Manitoba (CMM)
Steps to be considered in the process:
Step 1
Self-assess your interest and readiness to start the process of becoming a midwife in Manitoba.
Step 2
The CMM recommends that before spending time and money on assessment, gap training and the registration process, you contact your immigration office to ensure you meet the requirements to immigrate to or work in Manitoba.
Step 3
Before applying for CMM registration, complete a CMM-approved bridging program. There are two CMM-approved bridging programs that internationally educated midwives could choose from:
- The International Midwifery Preregistration Bridging Program (IMPBP) offered by the R. Chang School of Continuing Education at Toronto Metropolitan University. The IMPBP offers distance-based learning, allowing some flexibility in being able to complete all or most of the program in Manitoba.
- The Internationally Educated Midwives Bridging Program (IEMBP) offered by the University of British Columbia.
NOTE: Candidates must pass each component of the Assessment and Bridging program to move on to the next component. Only those who successfully complete all components are eligible to proceed to the Canadian Midwifery Registration Exam (CMRE).
Step 4
Ensure you are able speak, listen, read and write very well in English to be eligible to practice midwifery in Manitoba. All gap training and bridging programs require recent evidence of English Language testing. Gap Training and Bridging programs set their own requirements. Please review all eligibility criteria of the program you wish to apply for.
Step 5
Consider using Manitoba’s online resources to practise your English from your home computer with online language lessons and activities. Also, a free English language test is available for all immigrants through funding from the Government of Manitoba. The test is called the Canadian Language Benchmarks Placement Test (CLBPT). It is provided by the Winnipeg English Language Assessment and Referral Centre (WELARC).
Step 6
Investigate programs for financial help that may support you paying for the costs to complete the assessment, gap training and registration process, such as assessment, course and exam fees. Two programs exist that may help you with these costs (Click Here).
Step 7
Sign up, write and pass the CMRE (before applying to the CMM).
Step 8
Apply for registration to the CMM and complete their jurisprudence exam.
Language requirements
All gap training and bridging programs require recent evidence of English Language testing. Applicants should refer to those programs’ specific requirements.
