British Columbia Registration Pathway: Long Roadmap for IEMs

Step 1

Complete University of British Columbia’s (UBC) Internationally Educated Midwives Bridging Program (IEMBP) and pass the Canadian Midwifery Registration Examination (CMRE).

Step 2

Register with the British Columbia College of Nurses & Midwives (BCCNM) under:

  • Practicing midwife registration; or
  • Provisional midwife registration
BCCNM language requirements and assessments

English Language

Within application, asks applicant to provide primary language, and other languages spoken. If English is not the applicant’s primary language, applicant may need to take an English Language exam.

English Language testing

The following countries are considered to be eligible for exemption from English language testing if the applicant completed their midwifery education there in English:

American Samoa, Anguilla, Antigua & Barbuda, Australia, Bahamas, Barbados, Bermuda, Belize, Botswana, British Virgin Islands, Canada (including Quebec), Cayman Islands, Dominica, Falkland Islands, Fiji, Gambia, Ghana, Gibraltar, Grenada, Guam, Guyana, Ireland, Jamaica, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Malta, Mauritius, Montserrat, New Zealand, Nigeria, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Singapore, South Africa, St. Helena, St. Kitts & Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent & the Grenadines, Trinidad & Tobago, Tanzania, Turks & Caicos Islands, Uganda, United Kingdom, USA, US Virgin Islands, Zambia, Zimbabwe.

For applicants who are not exempt, then the applicant will need to take the IELTS academic test and achieve a minimum of 7 in all areas.
