Alberta Registration Pathway: Long Roadmap for IEMs
An internationally educated midwife from a midwifery education program outside of Canada, who has not yet registered as a midwife in Canada and would like to apply for registration with the College of Midwives of Alberta (CMA) must complete a three-part registration process. The registration process involves an extensive list of requirements for registration, Click for more.
To help applicants follow Parts 1, 2 and 3 of the process, use the Checklist for Registration – Internationally Educated Midwives to ensure the required documents and fees are enclosed with application to the CMA.

Part 1
The registration process involves an education credential assessment from an independent service, application for registration to the CMA by providing a completed, dated and signed application, and by creating your CMA profile, payment of a non-refundable application fee of $1500 CAD to CMA, uploading government issued identification, documentation regarding citizenship, residency or employment authorization, documentation to support a name change (if applicable), official transcripts and certificate/diploma/degree from your midwifery program (or a letter directly from your Midwifery Education Program), documentation of your course syllabi, evidence of a midwifery examination taken outside of Canada (if applicable), detailed information and supporting documentation about your practice experience and birth numbers, evidence of your practice experience, completion of the Competence Assessment Tool, evidence of successful completion of mandatory competences (i.e., in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, Fetal Health Surveillance, Emergency Skills and Neonatal Resuscitation), completion of online trauma informed module, different surveys, juris prudence examination, and a criminal record check, proof of current English language test (if applicable), a Letter of Standing and Professional Conduct, two character declarations, and completion of the Professional Conduct Questions.
Once an applicant receives an interim recommendation from the Registrar or Registration Committee regarding their initial application, the applicant will be able to proceed to Part 2 of registration process.
Part 2
The registration process involves completion of the Canadian Midwifery Registration Examination (CMRE) and of the Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCE) recommended by CMA.
After meeting as the requirements in Part 1 and 2 of the registration process, the Registrar or Registration Committee issues a decision to approve the application or to approve the application with conditions. Once the decision is received, an applicant will be able to proceed to Part 3.
Part 3
The registration process involves providing evidence of professional liability insurance, notifying Alberts Health Services (AHS) regarding midwifery appointment and privileging, and making arrangements for practice permit fees (currently $4550 CAD annually).
NOTE: see What to Expect After You Submit Your Application about details of the stepwise process of your application at the level of the CMA, and also regarding the Alberta Association of Midwives (AAM) and the AHS Provincial Midwifery Administration Office (PMAO), and until ultimately, the applicant is publicly registered with the CMA.
