Alternative Dental Careers in Ontario

Dental hygiene is a separate regulated health profession in Ontario. The College of Dental Hygienists of Ontario states that dentistry programs generally do not satisfy its dental-hygiene education requirement; an internationally educated dentist will likely need to complete a dental-hygiene program.

Applicants from eligible non-accredited dental-hygiene programs first complete the FDHRC equivalency process, the NDHCE and the CPEDH, followed by the CDHO jurisprudence examination and registration requirements.

Graduates of non-registered programs, including eligible dentistry or dental-hygiene programs, may request an NDAEB eligibility assessment if their formal education covers the required national core skills. If approved, the candidate completes the Clinical Practice Evaluation followed by the Theory Examination.

Ontario Dental Assistants Association certification has separate membership, education, radiography and continuing-education requirements. Confirm both NDAEB eligibility and Ontario employer or certification expectations before enrolling in training.

An internationally educated applicant with relevant education, including dentistry, may apply to the College of Denturists of Ontario for an academic equivalency assessment before becoming eligible for the qualifying examination.

After examination eligibility and successful completion, the applicant must still meet the College’s registration requirements before using the protected denturist title or practising denturism in Ontario.

Applicants who completed a non-approved dental-technology program or another dental-health program may use the Dental Technology Education Equivalence route. This begins with CADTR credentialing and competency assessment, followed by the CDTO jurisprudence and ethics examination, registration application and professional-liability requirements.

• Dental office administrator or receptionist.
• Treatment coordinator.
• Dental claims or insurance support.
• Dental-product sales or customer education.
• Research, public-health project or community-program support roles that do not require dentist registration.

Employers set the qualifications for non-regulated roles. Do not perform controlled dental acts or use a protected professional title unless legally authorized.
