The Practice Eligibility Route (PER)

The Practice Eligibility Route (PER) offers a pathway for internationally trained specialists to assess their specialty training against the Royal College’s standards. This process aims to determine if candidates are eligible for the examination and, ultimately, certification based on their specialty training. This applies to internationally trained physicians (Specialists) whose speciality training was completed outside Canada, the United States, and the Royal College-approved jurisdictions.

For more detailed information, please visit the Royal College’s website.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must have completed their medical specialty training outside Canada, the United States, and outside of Royal College-approved jurisdictions. The content and scope of this training must closely align with the Royal College’s specialty training standards. For a list of approved jurisdictions and detailed criteria, please refer to the Royal College’s website.

Steps:

Step1: Credentials Review and Determination of Exam Eligibility

To pursue examination eligibility through the Royal College’s Practice Eligibility Route (PER), applicants must submit their training documentation for review. This process assesses whether the training aligns with Canadian specialty requirements. Successful applicants receive a ruling letter for examination eligibility in their specialty. The assessment fee for this route is $4,725. For more details, visit the Royal College’s exam fees page.

Step 2: Royal College Specialty Exam

After receiving your exam eligibility ruling letter from the Royal College, you’ll need to sign up and pay for your specialty exam. This eligibility is valid for five years, in which time you must successfully complete all exam parts. Failing to do so will lead to a “No further eligibility” notice. For information on exam fees, please visit the Royal College’s exam fees page.

Step 3: Time in Practice requirement

To fulfill the Practice Eligibility Route (PER) requirements for the Royal College Specialty Exam, candidates must have at least five years of specialty practice in their applied discipline, with the last two or more years being in a consistent practice location in Canada. Additionally, obtaining a Canadian practice license from the appropriate medical regulatory authority (MRA) and meeting the two-year Canadian practice criterion is mandatory.

Outcomes

Upon fulfilling all training, examination, and time-in-practice requirements, candidates become eligible for Royal College certification. Successful individuals are then invited to join the Royal College’s community of certified specialists, marking a significant milestone in their professional journey.
