Saskatchewan Registration Pathway: Long Roadmap for IEMs

Eligibility to register for a category of membership and licensure with the Saskatchewan College of Midwives (SCM) will be determined based on the individual applicant’s circumstances.

Applicants are encouraged to phone or email Registrar of the SCM to discuss eligibility for membership and licensure with the SCM, at 306.781.1356 or [email protected]

Once eligibility for registration has been determined and the applicant is ready to proceed, the necessary forms will be forwarded, and the Registrar will assist the applicant by answering questions and providing clarification where necessary.

NOTE: The length of time for the application process to be finalized may vary from applicant to applicant.  If possible, applicants are encouraged to contact the SCM at least three months prior to the employment/practice start date.

Step 1

Contact the Registrar of the SCM for further information on registration and licensure at 306.781.1356 or [email protected]

Step 2

Read about the licensing process for internationally-educated midwives. See Membership and Licensure> Becoming a registered midwife in Saskatchewan>Option 3 “Successful completion of an assessment process approved by the SCM, Click here.

Step 3

Consider that applicants who have completed midwifery education or training in programs, international or otherwise that are not recognized by the SCM, must successfully complete an SCM-approved assessment process that demonstrates the applicant’s ability to perform the entry-level competencies of midwifery and meet all other registration requirements of the SCM.

Step 4

Review the SCM-approved assessment processes that are available:

  1. Ontario – International Midwifery Preregistration Bridging Program (IMPBP)
The IMPBP is offered by The G. Raymond Chang School of Continuing Education at the Toronto Metropolitan University in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Please visit International Midwifery Preregistration Bridging Program for more information.
  2. British Columbia – Internationally Educated Midwives Bridging Program (IEMBP)
Contact the University of British Columbia to discuss eligibility for entry into the IEMBP. Visit their website.
  3. Prior Learning and Experience Assessment (PLEA)
Prior Learning and Experience Assessment (PLEA) offered by other Canadian midwifery regulators from time to time, remains approved by the SCM, however PLEA is not available in Saskatchewan.
SCM language requirements and assessments
The SCM has Midwifery Regulatory Bylaws about language proficiency. For an applicant whose first language is not English, they must show evidence that they meet the requirements for proficiency in English as recognized by the council.
