Steps to Licensure
**The pathway to midwifery registration varies across Canada. Use the steps below as a general overview, then select your province or territory for detailed requirements.**
1. Choose Province or Territory
Choose where you want to practise and identify the midwifery regulator responsible for registration in that jurisdiction.
2. Confirm Your IEM Pathway
Find the pathway that applies to internationally educated midwives in your chosen province or territory.
3. Verify Education & Credentials
Submit your education, registration, identity, and other required documents through the process specified by your regulator or approved assessment program.
4. Meet Language Requirements
Provide evidence of English or French proficiency if required by your regulator or pathway.
5. Complete Assessment / Bridging
Complete any required competency assessment, bridging program, equivalency process, prior-learning assessment, or additional education.
6. Complete Required Exam(s)
Complete the Canadian Midwifery Registration Exam (CMRE) or other examination requirements if they apply to your pathway.
7. Meet Jurisdictional Requirements
Complete any additional requirements established by your regulator, such as jurisprudence, clinical currency, required certifications, background checks, professional liability insurance, or authorization to work in Canada.
8. Apply & Get Licensed
Submit your final application to the provincial or territorial regulator and complete all remaining requirements. You may practise as a midwife only after your registration or licence is active.
